Most people would agree that music and sex are natural bedfellows, but not everyone would agree that banging tunes are essential for a spot of horizontal dancing. While music will play an important role in sex for some, others will be more focused on things like what you’re wearing, the way you smell, the encouraging words you whisper or the positions you end up in. Of course, if you and your partner do share the view that music is the best way to build the mood in the bedroom, that’s only half the story. Finding the tracks that work for both of you could be a tougher challenge than you might imagine. Everyone’s taste in music is different and a song that increases the libido of one person might have another heading for the door.
Is music an aphrodisiac?
According to a research survey of 2,000 people commissioned by Spotify and carried out by Dr Daniel Mullensiefen of Goldsmiths University in London, music definitely can be an aphrodisiac.¹ The study examined the link between music, romance and seduction from a neuroscientific perspective. It revealed, among other things, that the parts of the brain that are positively stimulated by drugs food and sex, are affected in much the same way by music.¹ Nearly 50% of people admitted they were more turned on by their favourite songs than they were by the touch of their partner.¹ What’s even more frightening than that revelation is the song that was discovered to be the one most arousing for most people. ‘Time of my Life’, the soundtrack to the hit 80’s movie ‘Dirty Dancing’ topped the poll for both men and woman in terms of sexiness.² (No, we’d never have guessed either.) But Dr Mullensiefen found differences between men and women elsewhere in the survey. He pointed out, for example, that men are more willing to ‘adjust’ their taste in music if it increases the chance of a conquest.² No surprises there, then!
Choose your music carefully
So, when you want to create a ‘sexy time’ mood, and you’ve decided music is going to play a major role, how do you decide which are the best tunes to make sure everything goes to plan? A different survey highlights just how important your playlist can be. In a study of 2,000 people, music streaming service Deezer reported that the sexiest voices for the majority when they’re getting ready to get down to it is Marvin Gaye, along with John Legend, Usher, Sinatra, R. Kelly, and Rihanna.³ Funnily enough, in this survey, the Dirty Dancing theme didn’t feature in the list of sexiest songs, which included “Let’s Get it On,” Rihanna’s “Skin,” Beyoncé‘s “Drunk in Love,” Justin Timberlake‘s “Sexy Back,” and Lil Wayne‘s “Lollipop.”³ And if you don’t want to turn off your partner completely, what shouldn’t you turn on? The popular view from this survey is that you should give rap and heavy metal a miss.³ The two artists that were given the biggest thumbs down in the bedroom, musically speaking, were Kanye West and Justin Bieber. The worst song of all? Apparently, Bieber’s ‘Sorry’ could lead to you having to make an apology of your own.³ And, just to return to the sentiment expressed in the title of this article for a moment, the Deezer survey reported that 30% of people are more turned on when tunes are playing during sex. Hang on a minute; that means 70% aren’t too bothered.³ That would suggest mood music is a nice-to-have rather than a must-have.
